USCIS Announces Immediate Form I-551 Extension Period Increase
On January 23, 2023, USCIS announced that all Forms I-551 where a Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence (Form I-751 or I-829) are pending are being extended for 48 months from the expiration date printed on the card.
These cards may have been subject to prior extensions of either 18 months or 24 months, but due to increasing processing times USCIS has now stated that those cards are extended for another 24 or 30 months (for a total of 48) respectively.
In sum, the new rule is: A Form I-551 is valid for an additional 48 months from its date of expiration if presented with a Form I-797C showing Form I-751 or I-829 filing. The Form I-551, accompanied by the I-797C becomes a List C document and must be paired with a List B document and is subject to reverification.
