Philadelphia enacts legislation to enhance City’s enforcement powers over employers
The law authorizes the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations to order an employer to cease operations in the city “for a specified period of time” if the Commission finds that the employer “has engaged in severe or repeated violations without effective efforts to remediate the violations.”
None of these terms are defined in the law.
The legislation was signed on June 22 and went into effect immediately.
This new legislation comes on the heels of a recent city ordinance which prohibits employers from inquiring into applicants’ salary histories. That law is currently being challenged by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia in the federal court.
