New Form I-9 receives approval
On Aug. 25, 2016, the Office of Management and Budget approved the final version of the new Form I-9, however, the form has yet to be released to the public.
According to the OMB’s Notice of Action, the USCIS will continue to accept the current (expired) version of the form for another 150 days – meaning employers can continue using these forms until Jan. 22, 2017. The new Form I-9 will have an expiration date of Aug. 31, 2019.
Now more than ever, employers will want to ensure that they are using the proper version of the Form I-9 as the U.S. Department of Justice recently increased penalties for violations related to the form nearly two-fold.
We are actively monitoring this situation and will be sure to keep our clients abreast of any updates that may affect I-9 processes, including the release of the newly approved form.
